Whimsy at the POFP Plant Sale

“What's life without whimsy?” ― Dr Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory

My friend, Mirriam Webster says that Whimsy is “a fanciful or fantastic device, object, or creation.”  Well, I told her, if you’re looking for whimsy come to the Power of Flowers Plant Sale on Saturday May 4 at the Tewksbury Senior Center, 175 Chandler Street, Tewksbury from 9 AM to 1 PM.  We’ll have all the whimsical devices, objects, and creations gathered together for sale on our Whimsy Table: fun garden items, repurposed items, and home-made art projects such as our popular painted chair planters, painted birdhouses and specially designed seed packages you may just want to frame!

Here are some examples of what you’ll find:

Antique White Wicker Child’s Rocker/Plant Stand. Donated by long-time, very generous POFP Volunteer, Linda C., whose late friend used it as a child over 90 years ago.  The rocker was then lovingly restored and repainted by Mary G., a very active, long-time POFP Volunteer.  This item would make a great plant stand or it’s sturdy enough to be used by a child again. Wouldn’t it look just lovely next to the Wicker Bassinet Planter offered in the Plant Sale Raffle? Yes, I think it would!

Framed Alcohol Ink Floral Artwork. This delightful original framed alcohol painting will put light, color and grace into any room of your home.  It was generously donated by local artist Donna Hunnewell.  On the Whimsy Table you’ll find several other of her alcohol ink artwork also donated by Donna.

Martini Glass Succulent Garden.  The glass is 12 inches high x 8 inches wide, which gives the succulents enough room to be comfortable.  Donated and designed by Heidi W., POFP Volunteer and Plant Sale Co-Chair, who says, “If you are a martini lover, then this is the succulent garden for you!”  A special guarantee comes with this item: if any plants die in 6 months they will be replaced by Heidi.

Art Seed Packs. Hudson Valley Seed Co. has teamed up with artists to design colorful seed packs that spark garden joy.  They make a perfect little insert tucked inside Mother’s Day, Thank You, or Get Well cards.  Then recipients can plant the seeds if they’d like as a remembrance of the occasion.  Donated by Barb M., a long-time POFP Volunteer and Plant Sale Raffle Captain.

Handmade Wooden Butterfly House. This wonderful, colorful wooden butterfly house was handmade by Bob B. and hand painted/stenciled by his wife, Rita B., two long-time, very active, very generous POFP volunteers.  You will find several other offerings by this talented pair on the Whimsy Table.

Painted Wooden Wagon/Planter. How Cute Is This!  This delightful red wooden wagon with black metal wheels would make a terrific planter.  It also was donated and decorated by Rita B.

Bicycle Plant Holder. Here is a cute-as-a-button black metal plant holder in the shape of a bicycle.  The plant is not included, so put your own plant in there or fill with shiny glass balls or some other garden adornment.  Donated by long-time POFP Volunteer and Whimsy Table Captain, Jane R.

Red,  White, and Black Chair Planter. Definitely adds some color and some whimsy  to your garden, this delightful wooden planter was made out of a child’s chair and decorated and donated by very generous, very active long-time POFP Volunteer, Maria F.

Wooden Bluebird House. Attract bluebirds to your garden!  This wonderful item was also made by Bob B. and painted/stenciled by Rita B.

Palm Tree Wind Chime. Listen to the soothing sounds of this tinkling wind chime as you sit in your glorious garden sipping an adult beverage.  The wind chime has two silhouetted palm trees atop metal pipes with sea glass strikers while a lovely shell flower the catches the wind.  Donated by Jane R., Whimsey Table Captain.

This is just a sampling of things that will be available on the Whimsy Table.  There are lot and lots of other items that should be seen: garden flags, garden statues/decorations made from repurposed glass by Heidi W., Plant Sale Co-Chair; handmade garden aprons with clippers and gloves; More beautiful framed alcohol paintings, more chair planters, more succulent gardens…. more whimsy.

See you there!
