Although it’s celebrated all week long, Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22, 2020. According to Earthday.org this year marks 50 Years of Earth Day, and the theme this year is Climate Action. The folks at Earthday.org say they chose the theme because, “Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.”
By the end of 2020 nations are expected to increase their commitments to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Every country in the world must step up to avoid leaving a dangerous legacy for future generations.
Scary stuff. You may ask, “What can I do to avoid this frightening forecast?”
In years past, Earth Day was celebrated all over the world by communities coming together to celebrate Mother Earth and to discuss what we can do to help her. Unfortunately this year, due to COVID-19, the usual Earth Day activities, such as rallies, marches, conferences, workshops and seminars, have been cancelled. This year Earth Day has gone digital for the very first time. On April 22, follow this link to experience Earth Day Live 2020 for “24 hours of action”.
“Over the 24 hours of Earth Day …will fill the digital landscape with global conversations, calls to action, performances, video teach-ins and more.”
Right now earthday.org website has some wonderful information about meaningful actions you can take to help make the world a better place for everyone.
Here at the Power of Flowers Workshop we do our part; we don’t waste anything. We make every effort to be green by reducing, reusing, and recycling.
- We take donated flowers that would otherwise be thrown into some dumpster and save 70% of them. We re-hydrate them overnight and then recycle them into our small, individual signature bouquets.
- We use 100% biodegradable opaque design cups for our signature bouquets. These are the best fully biodegradable and compostable hot cups on the market. They are made from sustainable and renewable paperboard with corn based Polylactic Acid (PLA) lining. PLA is a renewable resin that is a durable, non toxic, refrigerator safe lining that resists leaking. PLA replaces typical petroleum based cup lining.
- Each month we recycle for reuse a van full of glass, paper, and plastic items. Hundreds of pounds a year of floral supplies and containers, in which donated flowers arrive, are cleaned. They are then given back to our floral partners for a small donation to reuse or to recycle.
- Volunteers regularly take home plant material to compost and cardboard boxes to recycle.
Be sure to view Earth Day 2020 online on April 22 to find ways you can celebrate the day…And join us to affect climate change by reducing, reusing, and recycling.
